Ann Arbor Fall Weekend Guide

Nicole's local picks for a perfect fall weekend in Ann Arbor: cozy coffee runs, brunch and dinner favorites, slow strolls, and this season's festivals and game days.

Ann Arbor Fall Weekend Guide

No. 06 · Local Favorites

Fall is my favorite season in Ann Arbor, and it is the weekend I hear about most: where to take the parents, where to grab a pumpkin-spiced something before the game, and how to spend one perfect golden-tinged Saturday. This is the itinerary I actually hand out, built from the coffee spots, brunch tables, dinner lights, and slow walks I send everyone to. The event dates below are for this season, so check the current calendar before you lock in plans.

Start slow: the best cozy coffee in town

My fall rule is simple: if a coffee shop makes a seasonal latte worth leaving the house for, it goes on the list. Start your Saturday at any of these and you are set for the day.

  • RoosRoast, for the Salted Maple Latte. Rich, warm, and exactly what an October morning should taste like.
  • Hyperion, for the Pumpkin Tahini Latte. The pumpkin is there, but the tahini keeps it nutty and grown-up.
  • Vertex, for the Jack O' Latte. Seasonal, playful in the best way, and a favorite with the kids.
  • Songbird, for the Pumpkin Pie Latte. Basically dessert in a cup, and I do not apologize for that.
  • Orijin Bakery, for the pastries to go with all of the above. Grab a few and turn the table into a picnic.

Brunch worth lingering over

Brunch in Ann Arbor is practically a sport, and the good tables are worth the wait. These are the places I send people who want the long, easy kind of morning.

  • Sava's, for the reliably great all-day brunch and the liveliest crowd on the block.
  • Vinology, for a seasonal brunch in a warm, brick-walled room right off Main Street.
  • The Village Kitchen, for homestyle plates that taste like a Michigan childhood.
  • Dimo's Deli & Donuts, for a casual stop where the donuts are the whole point, and everyone understands.

Dinner: fall on a plate

When the sun goes down early and the air turns crisp, this is where I point people for a proper fall dinner.

  • The Earle, for candlelight, jazz, and the coziest wine list in town.
  • Spiedo, for Northern Italian plates that feel like a warm blanket.
  • Miss Kim, for Korean flavors and a menu that changes with the season.
  • Zingerman's, for the legendary Reuben and the energy of a true Ann Arbor institution.
  • The Roadhouse, for wood-fired, farm-to-table classics that taste like fall itself.

Slow strolls and golden light

The best part of an Ann Arbor fall weekend happens between meals. Layer up, grab that latte to go, and walk it off.

  • Gallup Park, for river views and flat, easy paths along the Huron.
  • Main Street, for storefronts, fall window displays, and the best people-watching in town.
  • Kerrytown, for the market district, the bakeries, and the brick charm.
  • Nichols Arboretum, the Arb to locals, for the color. The hills and the river valley put on a show this time of year.

This season's can't-miss dates

A perfect fall weekend also knows where to be on which day. Here is the lineup for this season, straight from my calendar to yours. Use it as a starting point and confirm the details before you go.

  • Saline Oktoberfest, September 18, for brats, bands, and a friendly small-town crowd.
  • Michigan Football vs. UTEP, September 19, for your first Saturday in the Big House. Go Blue.
  • Whitmore Lake Farmers Market, September 20, for late-season produce and lake-town charm.
  • Fall Festival at County Farm Park, October 10, 11 AM to 4 PM, for pumpkins, hayrides, and proper fall family fun.

"My favorite thing about an Ann Arbor fall is how much of the season happens outdoors: a warm drink in hand, a good walk ahead, and the leaves doing all the decorating."
